The way I feel about my editor is the same way a toddler feels about any given food: one day I love her and the next day she repulses me. She likes one of my word choices: I love her. She tells me to cut more words: I hate her. I had no idea how much goes into editing...

The door doesn’t slam shut on a chapter of your The door doesn’t slam shut on a chapter of your life. It closes slowly.

The initial push to get the momentum started is the hardest, whether you’re pushing it or someone else is.

Along the way the door’s momentum may slow down, but the sliver of light is still getting smaller. The door may even stall and stop moving completely, but you know its only a matter of time before it continues its journey to becoming fully closed.

So as my door on this chapter closes, I am going to acknowledge every milestone along the way. If the door is going to inevitably close, you might as well celebrate as the sliver of light disappears into darkness. 🍾

And then you get ready to open the next door. 🚪 ❤️

This post is 2.5 months in the making…

I was holding off writing it, hoping that I would have a big update to give… but I don’t.

So I’m writing today to give you a non-update.

Two and a half months ago my life was turned upside down when I lost my job of 17 years. It was shocking and jarring and quite honestly, two and a half months later it still feels shocking and jarring. I’m working my way through the seven stages of grief, which my counsellor says is the normal process after job loss trauma.

As I work through the stages, I’m trying to find the joy in the small things like seeing the kids in the morning before school, going for a long walk with the dog in the middle of the day, taking online courses to help discover what I want to be when I grow up. I’m also eating a lot of chips and chocolate because… well, because it makes me happy. And there are times I need immediate happiness. I know working out and eating green things will make me happier in the long run, but I’m not there yet. (Maybe that will be the next stage?)

I’m trying to listen to the things my husband is telling me…. “You’ve worked hard your whole life, it’s okay to relax for a bit.” “Take some time for yourself. “Enjoy the down time.” “We’ll figure it out.” “We’re in this together.” “We’ve got your back.” (Maybe he should get into motivational speaking because he’s a damn good cheerleader.)

And I’m trying to be easy on myself, because if there was ever a time I need to lower my expectations of myself, this is it.

Thanks friends.

(And thanks to my sister Carly for buying this round of groceries! 😁)

𝙈𝙮 𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙨 𝘼𝙧𝙚 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚… 𝘼𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣!

Friends… this has been a learning experience.

To say the least.

On April 10, I posted a photo of me holding my book (!) after it was delivered. It wasn’t a single book that was delivered, it was 500 copies. As soon as the boxes arrived, I poured over them: looking at the images, reading the text, making sure it was perfect. And it looked perfect!

Until I really opened it up. That evening, my three kids and I sat down to read the book together. As I was reading the dedication page, I realized the spine was cracked. It looked like a book that had been signed out of a public library hundreds of times, instead of a brand new book right from the printers.

Hmmm, I thought. That’s unfortunate. One of the books is ruined.

I went downstairs to grab another one. Same thing. Next book? Same thing. I went through 5 boxes, and all 500 books had broken spines!

It was heartbreaking. To wait so long for my books, after struggling with the printers for months to get the images just right… it really stole the joy of the “I’m a published author” moment.

After weeks of back and forth emails with the printing company, it was decided that the books would be reprinted and sent to me as soon as possible… and the 500 subpar books would be sent back to the printers for recycling.

So a month later, here we are! I have 500 quality books and I can’t wait to get them to you!!! This week I will start mailing books out and for those of you who chose the local pick up option, standby! I will have the date of that very soon.

Her Loss 💔 My gain is her loss. I hear “M Her Loss 💔

My gain is her loss.

I hear “Mom.”
She hears silence.

I feel hugs.
She just has the memory of his arms around her.

I see smiles and eyes that light up with excitement.
She has to close her eyes to see his face.

I hear giggles and laughs.
She only hears the echos of them.

I get to watch him grow up.
She just gets to dream about it.

Because my gain
is her loss.
